You can play a really cool sounding polyrhythm by phrasing the bass drum every 3 sixteenth notes in a standard 4/4 pattern. This can add some rhythmic tension to your playing. If you have trouble with this, I suggest writing out the 16th note count above the measure to see where the notes line up (1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a).

This figure resolves every three measures. Try using it in your playing (where appropriate) by starting it after one straight beat in a 4 measure phrase (see video below).

When you feel comfortable playing this, try to move the bass drum rhythm over to the ride cymbal while playing quarter notes on the bass drum. Take it slow and enjoy.
